Holt: A Friendly Place to Live Sign

This iconic sign is painted on a large piece of plywood and is easily recognizable by its artist - Sterling Silver Alf. Alf was a Holt resident and artist for many decades. His work was seen by many, from business signs to fire hydrants, but perhaps none more recognizable than this sign that once welcomed residents and visitors to Holt.

Painted around the 1970s, the sign was placed along Cedar Street facing the southbound lanes not far south of the Willoughby Road intersection, welcoming those entering Holt from the north. It was encircled by metal signs for the Kiwanis, Lions, Jaycees, and GFWC (Womens’ Club).

When removed, it was saved by Leslie Forbes, longtime Holt resident and Kiwanian. He kept it safe for many years until his children donated it to the Holt-Delhi Historical Society in 2018.

Today, the sign hangs in the main board room in the Holt Community Center for easy public viewing.
