Holt's History of ‘Doing History’

Join Holt-Delhi Historical Society president Jacob McCormick as we discuss the history of the Holt and Delhi Township community “doing history.” We think about the topic of “doing history” as the various efforts over time in the community to document, preserve, share, and celebrate its history. The program will cover the Delhi Centennial celebration in 1942, Delhi’s 125th Anniversary in 1967, the American Bicentennial in 1976, the Michigan Sesquicentennial celebration in 1987, Delhi Township’s Sesquicentennial in 1992, the creation of the Holt-Delhi Historical Society 10 years ago in 2014, and the Delhi Township 175th Anniversary celebration in 2017, as well as looking on the horizon to the U.S. Semiquincentennial (or 250th anniversary) in 2026.

The program will be held on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at the Holt Community Center and will double as a 10th birthday party for the HDHS.

Centennial History of Holt Fire Department Program

Join the Holt-Delhi Historical Society and board member Inge Kyler as we commemorate the centennial of the Holt Fire Department. The program will be held on February 29, 2024, at 6:30 p.m., at the Sam Corey Senior Center, 2108 North Cedar Street, Holt.

Founded on February 14, 1924, the originally all-volunteer department has gone through many changes through the years. From the first chief George Shaw, to the longest-serving chief Clayton Quenby, to the first fulltime chief Stanley Morrison, to current chief Brian Ball, just eight chiefs have led the department in the last 100 years. The first source of transportation for equipment was a REO Speedwagon equipped with a tank and hose apparatus. Next time you visit the Holt Farmers’ Market think about the years of department history happened in its walls as the main department house, built in 1959.

We extend our well wishes to the Holt Fire Department for another successful 100 years on this centennial anniversary of their founding!

Sixty-two years ago, Michigan began writing its current constitution. The state elected delegates who spent two years drafting the constitution at the Civic Center in Lansing. George Romney, who later became Governor Michigan was a vice president of the convention, and former President Dwight D. Eisenhower addressed the convention in December 1961.
