Guernsey Dairy Corp. Plant

Guernsey Dairy Corp. Plant

2470 North Cedar Street, Holt, Michigan

Status: Still Standing

Opened: 1938

Architect: Unknown

The building at 2470 Cedar St. was built in 1937-1938 as the Guernsey Dairy Corporation on land sold by Leo Carter at the corner of Cedar and Willoughby Roads. The dairy plant operated for a decade on the site, owned by Frank Allen. It was described as a "large white building." Among notables who worked at this Guernsey Dairy plant in Holt are Arvid Rehkopf, who went on to co-own the Holt Dairy Company from 1947 through 1969.

In 1947, Murrel Moon purchased the building and acreage for his Midway Tavern. Midway Tavern had originally operated as Midway Gardens not too far south of your site on Cedar Street. Once Midway Tavern moved into 2470 Cedar, they renovated the interior to suit their needs. Midway Tavern became the Midway Bar over the years. Briefly in 1961-1962, the bar was operated by Horace Greeley and was called Greeley's Bar and Grill. Murrel Moon remained owner of the building during that time. Moon sold the bar to Vincent Novello in 1962.

Some of the adjacent businesses to 2470 Cedar were sold off as parcels over the years from the original 7 acres that made up the Guernsey Dairy plant.
