The need for senior citizen housing came to the attention of Delhi Township officials, including Billie Dowell, around 1972. A proposal was presented by Lansing developer Francis Fine for a high rise senior citizen housing complex in Holt in 1976. The Delhi Township board signed on to the idea. Fine, along with Southfield-based Amurcon Corporation, acquired the Rollen Sanderson house and property in downtown Holt to build the complex. Construction took about one year and the apartment building became the tallest building in Holt.
Tamarack Apartments are a 100-unit five-story complex. Ninety of the units were one bedroom and ten were two-bedroom. The facility also included a community room, craft room, lounge, library, hobby room, and outdoor spaces.
As part of this development, the building at 4410 W. Holt Road (the Sanderson home) was donated to Delhi Township for use as a library by Francis Fine. It served that purpose from 1980 through 1996, and is today the Holt Community Center.
