The Holt Fire Department was established in 1924 and operated from its old Fire Barn from those earliest years through the construction of this building in 1959. The old Fire Barn was located adjacent and attached to the Delhi Township Hall at 1974 Cedar Street. In March and April 1958, a plan was presented by the Delhi building committee to raze the old Fire Barn and replace it with a new modern building on the same site as a planned new fire truck would not fit in the old building. This plan also came along with a new library space, as the Holt Library shared space in and adjacent to the Fire Barn.
In July 1958, the Delhi Township board sent the decision on a new Fire Hall to the electorate of the township. Voters authorized a new Fire Hall in August, and plans continued to take shape.
By August 1959, the Delhi Township Board of Trustee heard proposals from four local architects before selecting Charles V. Opdyke of Lansing as the architect for the new station in early September. The estimated cost of the hall was around $20,000. The building committee for the construction project was appointed by Supervisor Marshall Hartig, consisting of: Kenneth Hope, Charles Mason, and Harry Chaffee.
In August 1959, Supervisor Hartig and Clerk Adcock signed a contract with the lowest bidder, the H.T. Graham Company of Lansing, for the construction of the new Hall. By this time it was decided to build the hall on a new site rather than the existing Fire Barn site. Graham’s bid was for $31,886, well over the expected $20,000. As a result pieces were trimmed from the new building, including six feed in depth off the back of the building. Other costs cut were some concrete work, a gravel drive, face brick, and the elimination of the well and pump (planned for a later contract, meanwhile a local gravel pit was used for drawing water).
Construction began right away, with delays along the way. A shipping wreck in Indiana delayed the delivery of arches in October 1959. Ultimately, construction of concrete block and brick was completed in December 1959 and keys handed over to Delhi Township late in the month.
A northern addition was later added to the station. This became Delhi’s primary fire station from 1960 through the completion of the Delhi Township Community Services Center, containing all township services including the Fire Department, on Aurelius Road in 1996.
The building got a new life in 2008 when Delhi Township transformed the former fire station into the Holt Farmers’ Market, as it is used for today.
