Holt Recorder Building

Also Known As:
Park and Shop Supermarket

2018 North Cedar Street, Holt, Michigan

Status: Still Standing

Opened: 1947

Architect: Unknown

The commercial block at 2018 North Cedar Street was constructed in 1947 by Edward Tase of Jackson. The original occupant was the Holt Recorder newspaper, from 1947 through about 1952 when the paper ceased operations. The Recorder was Holt’s only newspaper in this period and was owned and operated by Fred Birchfield when this building was purchased for the paper. Visit Newspapers for more information on this publication. Birchfield rented a portion of the ground floor for a storefront and the second floor for living quarters, with the remainder of the building used for the printing operation.

The building was expanded, doubling in size, to the south. The expansion was likely done in the mid-1950s by Tony Paradise for his Park and Shop Supermarket. The market occupied the entire building and included a parking lot overhang or archway, which has since been removed. Around 1963, the Park and Shop joined the Thriftway supermarket chain, local to Greater Lansing. Paradise closed the Park & Shop around 1967.

In 1967, Meese’s Kamping Center opened in the building. In 1970, it changed hands to the Capital Camping Center, which operated through 1972.

In the 1980s, it was operating as the Holt Community Hall.

In 1989, the R. James Feed and Pet Supply store opened in the building, owned by Robert Charles Cicigoi, who also ran a pet store in Portland, MI.

In 1995, Tony Paradise sold the building to the Delhi Township Downtown Development Authority. The DDA rehabilitated the building to its current appearance from a somewhat dilapidated state.

H&R Block operated in the building in the late 1990s, followed by Wild Beanies. Later occupants in the 2000s include Jordan Roofing, Holt Community Pharmacy, Wild Strawberry and More, and others.
