Rosario’s

Also Known As:
Sammy’s Paddock Lounge

1957 Cedar Street, Holt, Michigan

Status: Still Standing

Opened: 1962

Architect(s): Unknown

The commercial restaurant building at 1957 Cedar Street was built by Anthony DeRosa in 1962. A date stone is embedded in the front (east) of the brick building, but is consistently hidden by the wood exterior finishes.

Originally the building housed DeRosa’s restaurant venture Rosario’s, which opened in February 1963. The restaurant served Italian and American dishes. The interior walls featured paintings by Mina Greco, Italian-born artist with well-known works in Rome, Milan, and Venice. Her works were sold at the restaurant, but she kept the walls filled with new works as each was sold. The head chef of Rosario’s was Edward “Rocky” King, who came to Holt from Wheeling, Illinois, where he a chef at Chevy Chase Country Club.

From 1964 to 1970, the restaurant was leased to and liquor license transferred to William and Marguerite White, who owned and operated White’s Lounge. White’s offered food, drinks, and live music.

Rosario’s reopened in 1970 for a few years, before the building became the longtime home of a Holt staple - Sammy’s Paddock Lounge.

Sam Corey came to Holt from Lansing and opened Sammy’s in this building in 1974. Corey and later his sons Mark and Mike, owned and operated Sammy’s from 1974 through 2002, then again from 2007 to 2012. Delhi Township’s Senior Center is named for Sam Corey, who served as a Township Trustee for many years.

The building has since gone through periods of vacancy and operation as various restaurants.

DeRosa date stone revealed during renovations in 2014.
